OUR HISTORY

Mt. Zion Baptist Church was organized on Sunday, January 17, 1982 by the Rev. Emmanuel T. Rucker. The organizational meeting was attended by the following members: Brothers William Ledbetter & Alphozo Martin, Sisters Louise Ledbetter, Gloria Ingram & Mary Martin, and Mother Geneva Craft.

The first worship service was held on January 24, 1982 in the chapel of Hazlip Funeral Home. The Kirkman Park School was made available for use on January 31 and worship was held there for the next four months. In May 1982, the church entered our present location which had previously been the St. Mark Methodist Church. A dedication service was held in June of that year. Under Rev. Rucker’s leadership, the church grew to over 500 members.

In December 1991, the church suffered a great loss with the home going of our organizing pastor. His love for the church was demonstrated by his commitment to God’s Word and god’s people. From January 1992 through April 2001, the following served the congregation as pastor: Rev. Michael Ellerbe, Rev. Terrance Evans, and Rev. Michael Long. In June 2002, Rev. Dr. Calvin Shaw accepted the call to become Interim Pastor and in October 2003 was installed as pastor. When he decided to retire in 2007, the church went through an extensive and lengthy search to find our next leader.

In June 2009, Rev. Frank Thomas began serving as pastor and was officially installed on January 17, 2010.
