Ezekiel 36:26-28
All people are born in need of a new heart. David recognized this need because he was “brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me“ (Psalm 51:5). This passage reminds us of three wonderful truths. First, God promises, a “new heart“ and a “new spirit.” This is the new birth, made possible by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit. Second, the governing power of the Holy Spirit enables us to be rid of our stubbornness and our selfishness. The Holy Spirit removes these stones and replaces them with hearts that are responsive to the things of God. Rather than following the ways of the world, the Spirit empowers us to follow the statutes of God. Third, as a result of the Holy Spirit’s work, we become people of God, and stand in line to receive all that He promises His children. This is a wonderful promise!
